Thursday Thirteen #26: What Kids Did: BC (Before Computers)

It's hard to believe there was a time before everyone, from age 2 to 92 sat in front of a computer for long stretches of each day, I know. But, there was a time BC (before computers), when kids actually did these things, and enjoyed them:

1. Hopscotch

2. Jump Double Dutch (" 1 ten, twenty thirty forty fifty sixty seventy....")

3. Clapping Games ("Miss Lucy had a steamboat, the steamboat had a bell, Miss Lucy went to heaven but the steamboat went to hell-o operator....")

4. Jigsaw Puzzles

5. Colorforms

6. Pick up Sticks (not sure why anyone thought this was a good idea, but it did take some skill)

7. Tinkertoys

8. Paint by Numbers kits

9. Etch-A-Sketch

10. Mouse Trap

11. Chinese Checkers

12. Easy Bake Oven (who knew, prior to its advent, that it was actually possible to bake via the power of one lightbulb?!)

13. And for me, the ultimate joy: the 64 box of Crayola crayons (I often say it's why I'm an artist today!)

Hey, my nieces still do many of those games. And computers or not, my time has past for most of them. I think a good balance can be struck between them. Oh, except for pickup sticks and chinese checkers - can we just leave those off? ;-)

Happy TT :-)

My 14 year old daughter and her friend just had a hula hoop showdown. I was so proud!

Drawing with crayons and putting together jigsaw puzzles were two of my favorite activities growing up. Believe it or not, my sister still has her Easy Bake Oven. It might even still work.

My T13 about Saturday morning TV is up.

#3 had me singing the rest of the song, lol. I remember doing all of those and even getting quite complicated with the clapping moves. I tried to teach my daughter once and she just stared at me like I had lost my mind.

Thanks for stopping by!

Cuts, bruises, dislocations, mud, sweat, tears, hurt pride, and loads and loads of laughs, excitement, cameraderie, adventure, fun ...
Need I say more? :-)

Oh, there's SO MUCH to love on this list (smile). "Miss Mary, Mack, Mack, Mack!" Loved me some hop-scotch. Of course, being blessed with the clumsy gene, I didn't do much double-dutching . . . just one rope for me, please(LOL).

I tried to get my own kid hooked on the colorforms and the jigsaw puzzles, needless to say, he was so unimpressed.

And as for the crayons, as long as they came with the sharpener, hey, I was good to go! Great list Michelle. Took me back down memory lane (smile).

We encourage the kids here to still do a lot of those things on your list - which filled my days as a kid :)

TV and computer games win out for older kids,, but smaller kids are easily pried away from those. hehhe :)

Awesome TT!
