Playdate Report: All Over Except the Oohs and Aahs
Saturday was my last "official" day at Marbles, but today, I was there to put the finishing touches on our second collaborative canvas project. Here are some images of girls painting on Friday evening (there were some very serious faces while they were working, and some big smiles when they were done).
I found this project to be a rewarding one for the children and for me. The children got to feel like they were "real artists" (an exact quote from one proud 7 year old), and everyone seemed excited by the idea they'd be able to see what they'd worked on hung up at the Museum. For me, it was fun to see how each child approached lines on a canvas which usually didn't look like very much, even after I explained the whole idea behind the collaboration. After they were completed, one of my favorite moments was finding one small, reddish six-legged octopus and two tiny fish added to the bottom right corner of the first canvas, swimming beside the large fish I'd drawn. I also love the beautiful, radiating colors of the sun. There are some surprising color similarities, and some areas where the colors don't seem to relate at all, but when you see the 25 canvases together, it works as a whole painting.
Though the official reveal isn't until tomorrow, here's a sneak peek at the first canvas, "Create!" which was hung just as I left this afternoon. The second one, "Play!" will go in the large, blank area to the right of my work. I wish I could be there to hear all the "oohs" and "aahs" tomorrow...I think I'll have to make a trip back later this week, just to see how the children and parents respond.
